Growth Factors for skin and hair

Hyaluronic Acid (HA) plays an important role in our formula. Our HA is a high Molecular weight, polyanionic polysaccharide and is naturally present in virtually all vertebrate tissues and fluids including the skin's extracellular matrix. HA has a strong and complex relationship with the skin both physicochemically and biologically. HA supports the skin's architecture. it governs the skin's elasticity, it is involved in migration and differentiation processes during wound healing and inflammation.

There is some evidence that HA and growth factors (i.e., fibroblast growth factor) act synergistically to accelerate healing.(1) HA was shown to interact with growth factors, thereby protecting them from degradation by proteases.(2) HA can be used as a topical drug delivery system for a localised delivery of drugs.

We use HA in our formula for the following reasons:

There are many cosmetic products on the market containing Growth Factors. But none of them are as efficacious or as powerful as ours. Often when you purchase an anti-aging cream containing growth factors, the growth factors within the bottle are not very stable. This means, they begin to break down whilst present, in the cream or serum, and by the time the product comes in contact with your skin it is not effective.

The Science

The use of growth factors and cytokines in skin rejuvenation and the reversal of photoaging is emerging as a serious anti-aging treatment. Several growth factors like bFGF, KGF-2 and IGF-1 affect the proliferation and differentiation of keratinocytes, hair growth and dermal fibroblasts - the most common cells of connective tissues, forming the extracellular matrix.

Providing some of these growth factors to cells responsible for extracellular matrix production, appears to help aging skin. Many cosmetic companies have produced anti aging serums and creams containing a single human growth factor or a combination of multiple human growth factors. Compared to older skin, younger skin is thicker and has more subcutaneous tissue.(3)

Architects of Skin have carefully selected 5 growth factors that all work synergistically together to maximise the development of collagen, and elastin fibres to strengthen the dermis, as well as build the epidermis for thicker more youthful skin. da Vinci 10 and da Vinci 21 when applied topically can increase skin thickness and improve collagen matrix formation, providing beneficial effects in reducing the signs of facial skin aging.

A recent clinical study, 14 patients with photo damaged skin, applied a gel containing a mixture of different growth factors to their facial skin, twice daily for 60 days. (4) Eleven of the 14 patients showed clinical improved in at least one facial area using a 3mm punch biopsy and optical profilometry. Patient questionnaires were answered at 60 days. The peri-orbital region showed a statistically significant improvement (p = 0.0003). Optical profilometry showed a statistically significant reduction in Ra measurement (p=0.0075) and shadowing (p=0.02), both indicating a decrease in the depth and number of textural irregularities or fine lines. Biopsies revealed new collagen formation in the Grenz zone (37% increase in thickness) and thickening of the epidermis by 27%. Eight of 14 patients felt their wrinkles were improved, while 12 of 14 felt their skin texture was improved.

bFGF or basic Fibroblast growth factors promote healing and tissue regeneration. bFGF improves elasticity of the skin by synthesizing collagen and elastin. It also creates new epidermal cells, providing a thicker epidermis. When used in combination with EGF, and IGF-1 it provides a more powerful combination for the epidermal proliferation and differentiation than if it were acting on its own.


IGF-1 is another growth factor which exists within our body. IGF-1 decreases with age from 30 years old. It is one of the major regulators of cellular proliferation and differentiation. The skin regains its thickness, becomes more elastic and hydrated and people start looking visibly younger, usually within a few weeks. Fine lines reduce and deeper wrinkles recede.


KGF-2 or keratinocyte growth factor is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family. KGF-2 is expressed in the dermal compartment. KGF-2 is often used in wound healing technologies like skin ulcers and other chronic wounds. It has shown to enhance neo-granulation tissue formation and dermal cell proliferation.

From a cosmetic perspective, stimulates the epidermal keratinocytes and dermis. It also increases wound healing times. When KGF-2 is applied post laser resurfacing procedures like Co2 and fractional laser therapies, downtimes are significantly reduced.(5)


What is now known as epidermal growth factor (EGF) was first described by Cohen (1962).

EGF reverse the signs of aging skin by reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots on face and hand. EGF are lengthy chains of amino acids that are vital to ensuring that cells behave normally, while also reducing inflammation in the skin.

Further, these growth factors are also believed to boost the growth of natural collagen, which is the protein in the skin that helps it keep its firmness and elasticity. When collagen production is increased, the skin becomes firmer and more supple, which tightens skin to ease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

The anti-inflammatory capabilities of these growth factors may also reduce redness and swelling associated with acne, rosacea, and eczema.


SOD-1 or superoxide dismutase is found in the dermis and epidermis and is key to the production of healthy fibroblasts (skin-building cells.)

SOD has been studied in Rockfish and scientists have found that rockfish live to over 200 years old. One of their attributes is that their level of SOD does not decline as they get older. SOD repairs cells and reduces the damage done to them by superoxide, the most common free radical in the body. Studies have shown that SOD acts as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in the body, neutralizing free radicals that can lead to wrinkles.

SOD is one of the most powerful anti-oxidants and makes every cell in your body more resilient and able to fight off attacks. No other antioxidant, nor carotenoids, nor flavonoid, nor Vitamin A, C and E or CoQ10 come close to the power of SOD. That’s why it's a key ingredient in our anti-aging serum. You cannot ingest SOD as it is destroyed by the stomach, so a topical application is key when treating aging skin.
